Overview
Vernazza is the next-to-northernmost and perhaps most picturesque of the five Cinque Terre villages. Colorful antique homes cling to impossible cliffs above a lovely small harbor, with an ancient castle and dramatic seaside church creating postcard-perfect views.

Before you go
Activities
World-class coastal hiking between all five villages. The Vernazza-Monterosso and Vernazza-Corniglia hikes offer the most spectacular scenery. Wear sturdy shoes.
Language
Since tourism brought visitors via train and media coverage, most business owners speak enough English for typical visitors. Some locals may only know basic words like "room" or "zimmer" (German for room).
Money
Most stores accept major credit cards. An ATM is available in town. Euro (EUR) is the local currency. Budget about €50-80/day for budget travel including accommodation in shared rooms or basic guesthouses.
Transport
The milk train connecting all five Cinque Terre villages is the primary transport. Trains run very frequently and Vernazza station is a 10-minute walk above the harbour. No cars allowed in the village itself.
Weather
Best visited in spring or fall to avoid summer crowds. Summers are hot and crowded with day-trippers. Winters are quiet but some businesses may close.
