Overview

Vercors is a dramatic limestone massif of mountains and high plateaus in the Rhône-Alpes region of France, protected as the Parc Naturel Régional du Vercors. Before you go

Money

France uses euros (€). Credit cards are widely accepted in towns but carry cash for rural villages, parking, and small restaurants.

Packing

Bring layers year-round, sturdy hiking boots, and in winter: snow tires/chains, headlamp for caving, and avalanche safety gear if snowshoeing off-trail.

Safety

Karstic terrain means swallow-holes and cliff edges are hazards—stay on marked trails. Winter roads may require chains. Carry water; surface water is scarce.

Transport

A car is essential—public transport inside the park is nearly nonexistent. Roads are narrow, curvy mountain roads; drive cautiously, especially in fog or snow.

Weather

Vercors sits at higher altitude than surrounding valleys; expect snow earlier and later than Grenoble. Summer is mild, winter is cold with Nordic skiing available.
