Why Go

Varzaneh is one of Iran's most accessible desert destinations, located just 105 km southeast of Isfahan. The town preserves 5,000 years of civilization history along the Zayanderud river, making it unique among Iranian desert settlements. Travelers appreciate being close to civilization with easy access to food, water, and medical facilities while experiencing authentic desert landscapes. The town is famous for its spectacular sand dunes (5-62 m high, the highest average among Iranian deserts) and unique cultural traditions, including local women wearing white chadors instead of the black chadors common elsewhere in Iran.

Getting In

From Isfahan, take buses or minibuses from Jey terminal (40,000 rials, Dec 2016), departing almost hourly 07:00-17:00 with a 1 hr 45 min journey. Taxis from Isfahan cost approximately US$10-15 per car. From Tehran, buses depart Jonub terminal at 09:00 daily to Harand (20 km from Varzaneh), with cheap taxis available for the remaining distance. From Yazd, take buses to Na'in (60,000 rials), then taxi 70 km to Varzaneh. The last bus to Isfahan from Varzaneh departs at 14:00, though hitchhiking from the gas station shelter is easy and common.

Getting Around

The town is walkable, with major attractions clustered near the center. Taxis are available 24 hours a day and are generally cheap for reaching attractions outside town, such as the desert (15 km away), Gavkhooni Wetland (25 km), and Salt Lake (40-55 km). Private taxis cost around 100,000 rials to Na'in for onward connections to Yazd. Hitchhiking is particularly easy on the Varzaneh-Isfahan route, with a yellow shelter and bench at the gas station set up for auto-stop.

When To Go

The best time to visit is late spring through early autumn (April-October) for warm weather suitable for desert activities like sand-boarding, camping, and camel-riding. Summer temperatures can reach 40°C in July. Winter (January-February) temperatures drop below zero after midnight, making desert camping challenging without proper gear. The Gavkhooni Wetland attracts thousands of migrating birds, with numbers varying annually based on rainfall. The salt lake area is most spectacular under blue skies with vast white ground views.
