Why Go?

Varna is Bulgaria's third-largest city (after Sofia and Plovdiv) and the country's major Black Sea port, often called the "sea capital" (morska stolitsa). With nearly 350,000 inhabitants, it offers a blend of seaside relaxation, archaeological treasures including the Varna Necropolis with the world's oldest gold artifacts (4600-4200 BC), and Communist-era architecture. The city serves as the gateway to the northern Bulgarian Black Sea coast resorts including Golden Sands, St. Konstantin and Helena, and Albena.

Getting In

Varna Airport (VAR) receives flights from over 80 destinations worldwide, mostly European. Bulgaria Air operates the only domestic route to Sofia twice daily in summer. The Central Train Station is a striking Art Nouveau building completed in 1925, handling connections to Sofia, Plovdiv, and international destinations. The Central Bus Station (158 Vladislav Varnenchik Blvd) serves long-distance routes to Sofia, Veliko Tarnovo, Burgas, Istanbul, Greece, Romania, and Central/Western Europe in a modern 2024 building. Port Varna-East handles cruise ships, within walking distance of the Sea Garden and city center. Navibulgar operates ro-ro ferry service to Poti/Batumi in Georgia.

Get Around

Varna's city center is walkable, with Independence Square as the central hub and starting point of a pedestrian area leading to the Sea Garden. Public transport stops are located on Vladislav Varnenchik Blvd south of the Central Bus Station, with a pedestrian underpass for crossing. Bus lines 9, 109, and 409 serve the Sea Garden area. A 300-step staircase connects the Monument to Bulgarian-Soviet Friendship with Knyaz Boris I Blvd at the north border of the Sea Garden.

Things to Do

The Sea Garden (Primorski park) stretches several kilometers along the coast containing children's amusements, a petting zoo, monuments including Soviet cosmonaut busts, and numerous cafes. Buy

Varna has large shopping malls including Grand Mall, Pfohe Mall, Central Plaza, Mall of Varna, and Varna Towers. International big-box retailers Metro, Kaufland, and Carrefour are on the outskirts. Traditional downtown shopping streets have boutiques and gift shops. Tourist souvenirs are sold in small stalls at the resorts. Independence Square and the pedestrian area leading to the Sea Garden offer various shopping opportunities.

Stay Safe

Varna is generally safe, but caution is advised regarding the mafia—several cases of tourists being assaulted for improper behavior have occurred. Avoid people offering money change on the street near the cathedral (kozirkata)—they are scammers, and the area is also prone to pickpockets. If driving, be careful about parking violations as cars may be towed and penalties applied. The remote corners of the Monument to Bulgarian-Soviet Friendship area may have homeless people or addicts. The Beloslav Railway Station is in a dilapidated industrial area.
