Understand
Uzhhorod (also transliterated Uzhgorod) is the administrative center of Transcarpathia (Zakarpatska Oblast), a region that has changed hands multiple times. Until 1945, it was part of Czechoslovakia; before 1919, it belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This history created a unique blend of cultures, cuisines, and architectural styles. The 2020 population is approximately 116,000. Locals are generally friendly, though some may be initially reserved with foreigners.
