Overview

Urumqi serves as the capital of Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region and claims the title of the world's most inland major city, sitting 2,300 km or more from any ocean. The city offers a unique introduction to Xinjiang with its blend of Uyghur, Han, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Mongol, and Hui Muslim communities.

Many hotels, especially cheap ones, do not accept foreigners. Research accommodation in advance. Youth hostels offer budget options from ¥28.

Internet access and international calls may be restricted by government. Large hotels have broadband. SIM cards available from local providers.

Culture

Urumqi has a diverse population including Uyghur, Han, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Mongol, and Hui Muslim communities. Respect Islamic customs, especially regarding naan bread.

Food

Xinjiang cuisine features kebabs, pilaf, hand-stretched noodles, and dapanji. Local meals cost ¥1-60. Western food available but more expensive.

Money

Chinese Yuan (CNY/¥) is the local currency. ATMs are available throughout the city. Some budget hotels may be cash-only. International credit cards are accepted at larger hotels and restaurants.

Safety

General crime is low but pickpockets operate in markets. Large police/military presence due to ethnic tensions. Be prepared for security checks.

Transport

Taxis from Main Railway Station to downtown cost ¥25-30 (20 min). From South Station taxis are approximately ¥10. Public buses and BRT lines serve most areas.

Weather

Continental climate with cold winters (-7°C January) and hot summers (30°C July). Best visiting: spring and autumn.
