Overview

Urho Kekkonen National Park is Finland's second largest national park at 2,550 km², offering remote Arctic wilderness backpacking without the crowds of more popular parks. The park straddles the Russian border in Finnish Lapland and includes Korvatunturi, the legendary home of Father Christmas.

Connectivity

Mobile coverage weak—only Telia near Sokosti and along main roads. No electricity at wilderness huts. Offline maps essential.

Etiquette

Strict border zone with Russia requires permits for certain areas. Sompio is a strict nature reserve—stay on trails, no berry picking. Leave no trace camping principles apply.

Money

Finland uses euros (€). ATMs available in Savukoski (S-kaupat with S-card), Saariselkä, and villages. Cash withdrawals may require local card at some locations.

Packing

Bring sleeping bag, sleeping mat, camping stove, 9V battery for hut fire alarms, map and compass (GPS not reliable), sufficient food for backcountry sections.

Safety

Rapid weather changes on fells, areas without mobile coverage, water hazards at fords, avalanche risk in gorges. Carry map, compass, knife, matches.

Transport

E75 (Highway 4) runs along the western park border with daily coaches from Rovaniemi and Ivalo. Fly to Ivalo or Rovaniemi, take train to Rovaniemi then coach onward.

Weather

Arctic climate with polar night (kaamos) midwinter, midnight sun in summer. Temperatures -50°C to +20°C depending on season. Autumn colours (ruska) in early September.
