Overview

Urbino is a small but mighty Renaissance jewel perched atop a steep hill in the Marche region. The city is famous for its UNESCO-listed Palazzo Ducale, once home to the powerful Duke of Montefeltro, and as the birthplace of Raphael.

Shops close daily 2-4 PM and most close Sundays. First Sunday of the month has an antique market; otherwise avoid Sundays for shopping.

Local specialty is crescia flatbread stuffed with prosciutto crudo and formaggio. Traditional restaurants include Vecchia Urbino and Antica Osteria da la Stella.

Italy uses euros (EUR). ATMs widely available. Credit cards accepted at hotels and larger restaurants but bring cash for markets and smaller establishments.

Transport

Buses run frequently from Pesaro train station (45 min journey); no direct train to Urbino. Taxis available at Piazza della Repubblica (+39 0722 2550) and Borgo Mercatale (+39 0722 327949).
