Upolu is Samoa's most important island, containing the capital Apia and Faleolo International Airport. The 75 km-long volcanic island offers beautiful beaches fringed by reefs, hilly interior with tropical vegetation, and numerous waterfalls.

Culture
Samoa is a traditional society governed by Fa'a Samoa (the Samoan Way). Be respectful in villages and quiet areas. All beaches are Customary Land owned by villages.
Language
Samoan is the official language, but English is widely spoken and fluency is common.
Safety
Free-roaming dogs are common in Apia. Do not walk alone at night. The 2009 tsunami affected eastern and southern villages; some infrastructure may still be recovering.
Transport
Faleolo International Airport is the main gateway on the western end of Upolu. Car rental available in Apia from multiple operators including Budget and Discovery Rentals.
Water
Bottled water is recommended for drinking. Spring-fed freshwater pools like Piula Cave Pool offer safe swimming.
