Overview
Turpan sits in the Turpan Depression—China's lowest point at 154m below sea level and the second lowest on Earth after the Dead Sea. This scorching Silk Road oasis is famous for its thousand-year-old karez underground irrigation system, vast grape vineyards producing China's best raisins, and proximity to Flaming Mountain immortalized in Journey to the West.
