Overview
Traverse City is a scenic lakeside city of around 15,700 people on Grand Traverse Bay of Lake Michigan, known as the "Cherry Capital of the World" since around 75 percent of the nation's cherries are grown in Michigan, most from this area. Over a million visitors come each year to tour the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, explore two prime winemaking peninsulas (Old Mission and Leelanau), and enjoy four-season outdoor activities from beach going in summer to snow sports in winter.

Cherry Capital Airport (727 Fly Don't Drive) offers daily flights year-round on American, United, and Delta to Minneapolis, Chicago, and Detroit, with additional summer seasonal flights to Atlanta, Denver, and Marquette. Bay Area Transportation Authority (BATA) provides fixed-route bus service within Traverse City (M-F 6:10AM-6:40PM, Sa 8:10AM-5:40PM, no Sunday service) and advance-reservation curb-to-curb service in rural Leelanau and Grand Traverse counties for $1 fare.

Get around
Rental cars are available at Traverse City airport but tend to be expensive. BATA buses serve the city and surrounding counties for $1 per ride. The "Motel Mile" along US-31 between 3 Mile Road and 4 Mile Road offers dozens of accommodations, while downtown and the waterfront are walkable.

When to go
Summer (June-August) brings warm temperatures (70s-80s°F/21-27°C), beach activities, and peak festival season including the National Cherry Festival in early July. Autumn offers impressive fall colors with cooler temperatures. Winter brings high snowfalls ideal for skiing at Mt. Holiday Ski & Recreation Area. Spring is quieter but mud season can limit some outdoor activities.

Where to stay
Traverse City's "Motel Mile" along US-31 between 3 Mile Road and 4 Mile Road features budget to mid-range options, with many waterfront properties from downtown east to 5 Mile Road. Motels range from Economy Inn ($33-65) and Motel 6 (avg $44) to Best Western Four Seasons ($39-235) and Holiday Inn West Bay ($59-154). Vacation rentals and bed-and-breakfasts are available on both peninsulas.

Traverse City offers diverse dining from grab-and-go diners to waterfront restaurants. Don's Drive-In (2030 US-31 N) serves 1958-style burgers and cherry milkshakes ($3-12). Grand Traverse Pie Company (525 W Front St) offers over 30 varieties of gourmet pie including five cherry pie varieties ($4-6). The area's wine regions feature tasting rooms at Chateau Grand Traverse (28 wines including cherry wine sangria), Brys Estate Vineyard & Winery, and Peninsula Cellars. Attractions include the Dennos Museum Center (visual arts, sciences, performing arts), Music House Museum (rare antique musical instruments from 1870-1930, open May-December 10AM-4PM), and City Opera House (1891 opera house with theatre productions). Outdoor activities range from Grand Traverse Balloons ($245 for sunrise/sunset flights) to parasailing at Traverse Bay Parasail ($75 single ride). Safety
Traverse City is generally a safe small city. Standard urban precautions apply in downtown areas at night. Weather-related safety is a consideration: Lake Michigan conditions can be dangerous for swimmers, and winter driving on ice and snow requires caution. The area's remote attractions like Sleeping Bear Dunes require preparation for changing weather and terrain.

Day trips
The Leelanau Peninsula is northwest on M-22 and M-72, featuring charming small towns and wineries. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is about 30 minutes west on MI-72 with impressive sand dunes. Frankfort is about 1 hour west on US-31. Charlevoix is about 1 hour north on US-31. Petoskey is about 1.5 hours north. Interlochen is 20 minutes southwest on M-137 for arts and the music festival.
