Overview
Tomar rewards travelers who linger in its quiet backstreets. Portugal's last Templar commission sits virtually unblemished by modern development: the Castle of Tomar and its attached Convent of Christ form the most complete medieval ensemble in the country and earned UNESCO status.

Before you go
Connectivity
WiFi is available at Hotel dos Templários and most cafés. Local mobile operators (MEO, Vodafone, NOS) provide 4G coverage throughout the city.
Language
Portuguese is the local language. English is spoken at Hotel dos Templários and at the Convent of Christ ticket office; it is less common at residenciais and neighbourhood cafés.
Money
Portugal uses the euro (€). ATMs are widely available in the city centre on Rua Serpa Pinto and near the Praça da República. Most residenciais are cash-only; only Hotel dos Templários reliably accepts cards.
Transport
Tomar's train station is a 10-minute walk east of the historic centre on Avenida da Liberdade. Taxis from the station to the main square cost under €5. Rede Expressos buses use the terminal near the market hall.
Weather
Summers are hot (30–35 °C), making midday monument visits exhausting; plan for early morning or late afternoon. Winters are mild but rainy (5–15 °C). Spring and early autumn are ideal.
