Overview
Tierradentro is one of Colombia's least-visited UNESCO World Heritage sites, famous for its painted underground burial chambers carved into volcanic hillsides around 700 AD. Unlike the crowds at San Agustín, Tierradentro offers a raw archaeological experience with atmospheric tombs, lush mountain scenery, and an authentic village atmosphere in San Andres de Pisimbala.

Before you go
Connectivity
No internet available; mobile coverage unreliable in mountain valleys. Plan for disconnection.
Money
No ATM exists in San Andres. Bring all cash needed, including small bills—changing COP$20,000 notes is difficult.
Packing
Bring a reliable flashlight (torch)—local ones are poor quality. Layers for cool mountain mornings and rain gear are essential.
Safety
Guerrilla activity occurs in the broader region; check current travel advisories. Tourist targeting has been rare but road travel requires caution.
Transport
Buses run from Popayan (4 hr, COP$30,000), with connections from Bogota via Neiva or directly to La Plata (8 hr, COP$70,000). Last pickup from La Plata to San Andres leaves around 5PM.
