Overview
Tianchi (Heaven Lake) is the crown jewel of Xinjiang: a 4.9 km² natural lake at 1,980m elevation, ringed by snow-capped peaks and sky-scraping dragon spruce fed by thawing snow runoffs. The UNESCO-listed site offers a rare combination of alpine scenery, Kazakh yurt culture, and walkable trails without technical difficulty.

Before you go
Culture
Kazakh yurt culture is central to the experience. Look for Zuzhu (租住) signs to arrange overnight stays with local families.
Fees
¥155 park entry fee is the only mandatory cost. Yurt stays are ¥50/night with meals included.
Safety
Altitude at Maya Peak (3,000m) may cause mountain sickness. Long walks with many stairs require moderate fitness. Limited medical facilities.
Transport
Buses from Urumqi (2h each way) are the only public option. A free shuttle bus runs from park entrance to the lake since the funicular broke down.
Weather
High altitude (1,980m at lake, 3,000m at Maya Peak) means cold temperatures even in summer. Snow can fall year-round on peaks.
