Culture
Thousand Islands are popular with Indonesian families and wedding parties, especially on weekends. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, with modest dress appropriate when away from beaches.
Money
Only one ATM exists on the islands, located at Bank DKI on Tidung Island. Most transactions are cash-based. Bring sufficient Indonesian Rupiah from Jakarta as credit cards are rarely accepted outside resort offices.
Packing
Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, seasickness medication, and cash. Pack light as boat space is limited. Waterproof bags are recommended for protecting electronics during boat transfers.
Transport
Marina Ancol is the main tourist gateway with piers 6, 9, 15, 16, 19, and 22 serving different resorts. Muara Angke harbor offers cheaper local boat services but requires more planning and Indonesian language skills.
Weather
Avoid islands during heavy rain and thunderstorms, particularly for swimming and boat travel. The dry season (May-September) provides the best conditions for beach and water activities.
