Must-try dishes include nasi kuning (yellow rice breakfast, Rp 15,000), satay at Maryam-1, gohu ikan (Ternate-style sashimi) at Rumah Makan Lilian, and ketam kenari (coconut crab) at Pondok Katu (Rp 450,000). Air guraka (ginger drink) at Kawasan Tapak starts from Rp 5,000.
Money
Local currency is Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). ATMs are available in Ternate city center. Cash is preferred for small purchases, markets, and local transport. Major hotels and some restaurants accept cards.
Safety
Mount Gamalama is an active volcano with last significant eruption in 2011. Monitor volcanic activity before climbing. General petty crime is low. Standard urban precautions apply.
Transport
Sultan Babullah Airport (TTE) has flights from Jakarta. Local transport uses Angkot (shared minivans), Ojek (motorcycle taxis), and taxis. Speedboats to Tidore (Rp 58,000) and Sofifi (Rp 58,000) depart from Semut Harbour when 8+ passengers. Public ferry to Sofifi costs Rp 15,000 plus Rp 2,000 port tax.
Weather
Tropical climate year-round. Dry season (May-October) is generally best for outdoor activities. The island receives significant rainfall throughout the year.
