Overview
Tenorio Volcano National Park is famous for the Rio Celeste, a river with a striking milky blue color created when sulfur-rich volcanic water mixes with mineral deposits. The park attracts nature lovers and hikers who come to see spectacular waterfalls, traverse hanging bridges, and hike through both rainforest and cloud forest ecosystems.

Before you go
Money
Park entry costs US$12. Bring cash for entrance fees, camping (US$6/night), and food stands. ATMs are limited in Bijagua—withdraw before arriving if possible.
Packing
Rain jacket, sturdy hiking boots, and a walking stick are essential. Rubber boots are rentable near the entrance. Bring a reusable water bottle—disposable bottles are prohibited inside the park.
Safety
Watch for fer-de-lance snakes on trails. Trails are muddy and slippery especially after rain. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are recommended.
Transport
Public buses from Bijagua take about one hour to reach the park entrance. From La Fortuna, expect a two-hour drive to Bijagua. Rent a car for maximum flexibility in this remote region.
Weather
Dry season (December to April) offers better trail conditions. However, even in dry season, bring rain gear as afternoon showers are common in this tropical environment.
