Overview
Tengchong is a county-level city in western Yunnan Province bordering Myanmar, popular with Chinese tourists but relatively uncrowded by foreign visitors. The city is famous for its volcanic landscape, with the Tengchong Volcanic Geothermal National Geological Park protecting one of China's most significant volcanic fields.

Language
Mandarin Chinese is the primary language. English signage is limited outside major tourist attractions. Learning basic Chinese phrases is helpful.
Transport
Tengchong Tuofeng Airport has flights from Kunming and major cities; taxis are the only ground option from the airport. Didi (Chinese Uber) works well for city transport.
Weather
Subtropical monsoon climate with mild winters (4-17°C) and cool summers (17-25°C). Summer brings heavy rain (200mm+ monthly June-August). Spring/autumn are best for travel.
