Tampa International Airport (TPA) serves most major U.S. cities with non-stop flights, plus international connections to the Bahamas, Canada, Cuba, Great Britain, Germany, Mexico, Panama, and Switzerland. The airport uses a unique SkyConnect train system connecting the main terminal to airside satellites. Alternative airports include St. Petersburg-Clearwater International and Sarasota-Bradenton International. Amtrak's Silver Star stops at Tampa Union Station downtown, while Greyhound and Flixbus operate from stations downtown.

Get around
The HART bus system serves the Tampa Bay area. The TECO Line Streetcar connects downtown to Ybor City in about 10-15 minutes. Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft operate throughout the city. Driving is often necessary to reach attractions like Busch Gardens, ZooTampa, or nearby beaches. The CrossBay Ferry connects downtown Tampa to downtown St. Petersburg on Wednesdays through Sundays for $10 adults.

When to go
Winter months (December-February) offer the most comfortable weather with daytime temperatures in the 70s°F, though this is peak season. Summer brings intense heat with averages around 90°F and heat indices reaching 102°F, plus hurricane threats in late summer and fall. The Gasparilla Pirate Festival takes place on the last two Saturdays in January, drawing large crowds to the city.

Stay safe
Be aware while in the Suitcase City area surrounding Busch Gardens, USF, and University Square Mall where hitchhiking is prevalent—do not stop if flagged. Extreme west and east sections of Ybor City can be dangerous after midnight, though the main bar district is well-lit with police presence. Drive-through areas are safe; few tourists would need to walk in these neighborhoods.

Disney World in Orlando is about 90 minutes east via I-4. Gulf Beaches including Clearwater Beach and St. Petersburg are 45 minutes to an hour west via State Route 60 or I-275.
