Getting in

Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) is a major international hub, with the Airport Link train connecting to the city centre in 15 minutes (about $18 AUD one-way). Alternatively, buses and taxis are available. Long-distance trains from Melbourne, Brisbane, and Canberra arrive at Central Station. Interstate buses stop at various terminals around the city.

Getting around

The Opal card is your ticket for trains, buses, ferries, and light rail. A single bus or train trip within the city costs around $3-5 AUD, while a ferry ride from Circular Quay to Manly is about $10 AUD. For short distances, walking is pleasant; Uber and taxis are plentiful. For a scenic route, take a ferry instead of a bus.

Things to do

Most landmarks are in the City Centre: the Sydney Opera House, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney Tower, St Mary's Cathedral, Royal Botanic Gardens, and State Library. The Rocks district offers heritage and the Harbour Bridge walk. Darling Harbour has the National Maritime Museum, Sydney Aquarium, and Powerhouse Museum. Cross the bridge to Luna Park and Taronga Zoo. Manly beach is accessible by ferry. The Eastern Suburbs have Bondi Beach and La Perouse. Walking trails like Manly to Spit Bridge Walk and Bradleys Head offer harbour views.

Food and drink

Sydney's restaurants vary. Budget meals under $15 are available: a bowl of noodles in Chinatown for $8–9, Thai curry for $10. Mid-range mains $25–35. Top-end dinners can run $400–500 for two with wine. The multicultural scene offers cheap ethnic eats, especially Asian. Newtown is known for inexpensive Thai. For drinking, there are many pubs and small bars. Entry charges for live music $5–30. Most pubs close before 3AM. Dress codes apply in many venues.
