Overview
Surat is one of India's major commercial hubs, cutting and polishing 92% of the world's diamonds within its city limits. The city offers an authentic Gujarati experience far removed from tourist-heavy destinations—bustling textile markets selling designer Shalwar Kameez and sarees at half the price of Delhi or Mumbai, a vibrant street food scene featuring unique dishes like Locho, Surti Undhiyu, and Ghari, and a lively Sunday evening tradition where families spread bed sheets along Dumas Road to enjoy hawker food under the stars.

Before you go
Culture
Gujarat is a dry state with alcohol banned. Foreign tourists can obtain liquor permits, but finding alcohol through unofficial channels carries health risks from potentially adulterated products.
Food
Surat is famous for its unique Surti cuisine—less sweet than typical Gujarati food. Must-try dishes include Locho, Surti Undhiyu, Ghari, and Ponk (winter only). Roadside laari stalls offer budget-friendly meals.
Language
Gujarati is the primary language; Hindi is also widely understood. English is limited, especially with auto rickshaw drivers and local vendors. Learning basic Gujarati phrases is highly recommended.
Money
India's currency is the Indian Rupee (₹). ATMs are widely available throughout the city. Credit cards are accepted at larger hotels and shopping malls.
Safety
Surat is considered one of India's safest cities. Night travel is generally safe with active street life.
Shopping
Surat offers excellent textile and clothing deals—designer Shalwar Kameez and sarees at nearly half Delhi/Mumbai prices. Diamond trading happens at Varachha Road markets. Dumas Road has Iscon Mall and Big Bazaar.
Transport
Auto rickshaws are the primary mode of public transport. Surat and Udhna railway stations connect to Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, and other major cities. Surat Airport has domestic and limited international flights.
Weather
Winter (Nov-Feb) is ideal with 12-31°C temperatures. Summer can reach 42°C. Monsoon season (mid-June to September) brings heavy rainfall of 932 mm.
