Overview
Stromness is a port town on Orkney's Mainland with roughly 2200 residents. The Vikings named it 'Straumsnes' for the fierce tide at Scapa Flow, and 'Hamnavoe' meaning peaceful harbour where ships could safely anchor.

Northlink ferries connect Stromness to Scrabster (90 min) 2-3 times daily. Bus X1 runs hourly between Kirkwall and Stromness. Orkney Ferries serve Hoy and Graemsay from Stromness pier.
