Why go?

St. John's is the oldest city in North America outside the Caribbean, founded in 1497. The capital of Newfoundland and Labrador sits on the Avalon Peninsula at the easternmost point of North America, just 15 km from Cape Spear. Its colourful jellybean row houses on Gower Street, military history at Signal Hill, and countless fish and chips variants make it unlike any other Canadian city. At 2,100 km northeast of Toronto, it's closer to Dublin than Vancouver, offering a distinct Atlantic Canadian identity with Irish and British heritage.

Getting there

St. John's International Airport (YYT) receives flights from Toronto (3 hours), Montreal (2.5 hours), and Halifax. Major carriers include Air Canada, WestJet, Sunwing, Porter, and regional PAL Airlines. Air Borealis serves remote Labrador communities, while Air Saint-Pierre connects to the French territory of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon. By road, the Trans-Canada Highway terminates here; DRL-LR bus service runs daily from Port aux Basques ($135 as of January 2022) with numerous stops including Stephenville.

Get around

Metrobus is St. John's public transit system serving nearly all neighbourhoods, with limited service to Shea Heights, Kilbride, and Goulds. Single rides cost $2.50 (adults and seniors, Jan 2022), ten-ride passes are $22.50 for adults. Buses are frequently late and not considered reliable; walking is faster for journeys under 4 km. Taxi companies include Avalon Taxi, City Wide Taxi, Jiffy Cabs, Newfound Cabs, and Red and Yellow Cabs.

Safety

St. John's is generally safe with crime rates much lower than the national average, though increases have been reported. Panhandling is common downtown; responding no or ignoring usually works. After dark, exercise caution in Buckmaster Circle, Old and New Penneywell Road, areas around Hamlyn Road, Livingstone Street, Water Street west, and Shea Heights. On George Street, especially Friday and Saturday nights, excessive drinking and drug use can lead to violence. Be cautious at 24-hour restaurants where patrons from George Street may be aggressive after last call. Armed robberies at 24-hour convenience stores have increased.

Etiquette

St. John's residents are known for their friendly, down-to-earth manner. Tipping 15-20% is standard in restaurants. Dress is casual except for upscale dining. The city has strong Irish heritage; expect some local slang and expressions. Religious sites like St. Thomas' Anglican Church (oldest, built 1836) and the Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist deserve respectful attire.
