Overview
Speyer is one of Germany's oldest cities, dating to Roman times, with a remarkably compact UNESCO-certified old town. The Romanesque Imperial Cathedral (Kaiser und Mariendom), begun in 1030, dominates the skyline and holds the crypts of the Salian dynasty emperors.

History
Speyer has been a diocesan town since 346 CE, with early churches and monasteries built in the 6th-7th centuries. The cathedral foundation was laid in 1030 by Conrad II, first Salian emperor.
