Overview
Southend-on-Sea is a classic British seaside resort at the mouth of the Thames Estuary, famous for having the world's longest pleasure pier at 1.3 miles (2158 metres). Built up from the 1830s onwards, it was beloved by Victorian daytrippers seeking 'bracing' sea air away from polluted London.
