Overview
Soroca sits on the eastern bank of the Nistru (Dniester) River where it forms the border with Ukraine. The town is nicknamed the "Romani capital of Moldova" due to its sizable Roma minority and their elaborately decorated homes on the western hillside.

Before you go
Border
The Cosăuți-Yampil ferry to Ukraine costs about 5 lei and takes 3 minutes. This is an official international crossing with duty-free shopping. Weather-dependent.
Money
Moldovan leu (MDL) is the local currency. ATMs and card acceptance are limited in this smaller town; carry sufficient cash from Chișinău.
Safety
Soroca is generally safe. The main caveat: ferry services may be suspended during heavy rain or bad weather, potentially stranding travellers.
Transport
Buses from Chișinău run several times daily (2.5 hours, 74-75 lei). The town is walkable; minibuses (rutiere) serve wider areas.
Weather
Winters can be cold; the fortress has sporadic opening hours especially in winter months. Summer offers the most reliable access to all attractions.
