Soltau sits in the heart of the Lüneburg Heath (Lüneburger Heide), a protected nature reserve known for its purple heather in late summer. The town serves as the main hub for one of Germany's biggest amusement parks, Heide Park, and the Soltau Therme thermal baths complex.

Culture
Soltau has been a British garrison town (1949-1993) with the former military headquarters now converted to doctors' surgeries and a business centre. The town dates to 830 with a history of fires and destruction during the Thirty Years War.
