Overview
Smithers is an alpine-themed town in British Columbia's North Coast-Nechako region with a population of 5,350 residents (2016). The town requires downtown businesses to construct buildings in an alpine style, featuring a fibreglass statue called the Alpenman or Alpine Al at the main street entrance as its symbol.

BC Bus North operates twice weekly between Prince George and Prince Rupert with stops in Smithers. VIA Rail Canada runs daytime service between Jasper and Prince Rupert with an overnight stop in Prince George. The only taxi service ceased in January 2020.
