Overview
Smara offers a rare glimpse into one of Africa's most disputed territories, where Sahrawi and Moroccan populations coexist under a visible military presence. Founded as a desert oasis in 1869 and later developed as a Spanish garrison town, it preserves domed military barracks at the west end of Boulevard Hassan II.
