Overview
Singkawang is a small trading town along West Kalimantan’s west coast, famous for its multicultural and multi-religious character. About 70% of the population is of Chinese descent, mostly Hakka people, giving the city a distinct cultural identity.

Culture
70% Chinese Hakka descent gives the city a distinct multicultural identity. Known as “City of One Thousand Temples” with strong Chinese New Year celebrations including Pawai Tatung ritual.
Food
Hakka Chinese cuisine dominates. Famous for tofu, Choi Pan dumplings, traditional cakes, and kopi tiam coffee shops. Pasar Hongkong is a key food destination.
Money
Currency is Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). ATMs available in town. Prices are surprisingly cheap for food, with meals at local stalls costing very little.
Safety
General tourism is safe, but be aware of human trafficking allegations related to mail-order bride business targeting men from East Asia.
Transport
Pre-arranged shared taxis (“travel”) are the main inter-city transport. Road from Pontianak takes 3 hours for 140 km. New local airport has no regular flights yet.

Tropical rainforest climate with heavy rainfall year-round. Drier months June-September best for outdoor activities. Year-round temperatures 22.5-31.8°C.
