Why Go

Siliguri is the third-largest city in West Bengal and the largest in northern West Bengal, serving as the essential 'Gateway of North-Eastern India.' The city connects mainland India with Darjeeling, Sikkim, Bhutan, and the entire North-Eastern region via road, rail, and air. With a cosmopolitan atmosphere shaped by large Nepalese, Tibetan, and Sikkimese populations, Siliguri offers a vibrant music scene, excellent street food featuring authentic Tibetan and Nepali cuisine, and a surprisingly liberal urban culture for Eastern India. The city is also a major tea trading hub, making it ideal for purchasing Darjeeling tea at source prices.

Getting In

Siliguri is served by Bagdogra International Airport (IXB) with daily flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, and Guwahati, plus twice-weekly Druk Air flights to Bangkok via Paro. The New Jalpaiguri Junction (NJP) railway station is the busiest in North Bengal with connections to most of India, while Siliguri Junction (SGUJ) handles local routes and some long-distance trains including the Mahananda Express from New Delhi. Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminus on Hill Cart Road is the main bus station for regional destinations.

Getting Around

Getting around Siliguri is cheap and efficient. Electric rickshaws called 'totos' charge ₹20 per person on standard routes (₹10 for short, ₹30 for long), while shared vans follow established routes. App-based services like Yatri Saathi, Rapido (including bikes), and Uber are available. The core downtown areas can easily be covered on foot and are very safe, even after dark. Buses provide efficient public transport throughout the city.

When To Go

Siliguri has a warm summer (26-32°C, sometimes exceeding 35°C), cool winters (20-24°C maximum, dropping to 6-9°C minimum), and severe monsoon from June to September receiving 80% of annual 3,340mm rainfall. July is the wettest month (804mm) while January is the driest (12mm). The best time to visit is October to March for pleasant weather, avoiding the monsoon floods and summer heat. Winter mornings can be foggy, occasionally disrupting transport.

Where To Stay

For Darjeeling, Kurseong, and airport access, stay near Bagdogra, Matigara, or Darjeeling More (route 110 to Darjeeling, route 327 to airport). For Kalimpong, Gangtok, and Bhutan, choose Salugara or 2nd-3rd Mile Sevoke Road addresses (route 10). Budget travelers can find dorm beds at Backpackers Bunkhouse on Sevoke Road or Atathi Niwas near Siliguri Junction. Mid-range options include Hotel Mountain View (₹1,500-1,800) opposite Tenzing Norgay Bus Station, while Hotel Golden Moments on Hill Cart Road offers AC doubles from ₹942-2,698.

Food And Drink

Due to large Nepalese and Tibetan populations, Siliguri excels at authentic momos (dumplings) found at Momo Gali in Seth Srilal Market, and Tibetan cuisine at Taste of Sikkim. Bengali cuisine is available at Bhojohari Manna and Kalpana Hotel. The city has excellent Chinese food at Tai Wah Restaurant (est. 1990), Asian fusion at Steamy Moktu, and diverse options including Lebanese, Mexican, and Tibetan at Hi Spirits Cafe and Pub. Street food costs 50-100 INR per meal, while restaurant meals range 150-500 INR.

Things To Do

Siliguri offers Buddhist monastery tours including the Dalai Lama-inaugurated Sed-Gyued Institute (100-foot Tashi Gomang Stupa), Buddha Mundir Monastery, and Khordong Byangter Monastery with accommodation. Nature lovers can visit Bengal Safari Park (₹200-400 for elephant rides), Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary (daily 6AM-4:30PM, closed Tuesdays), or tea estate tours. The Science City in Matigara has a museum and planetarium. For family fun, Dreamland Amusement Park and Savin Kingdom (water park among tea plantations) are popular.

Buy

Siliguri's main shopping streets are Hill Cart Road (traditional stores and hotels), Sevoke Road (upscale malls and banks), and Bidhan Road (street markets). As the heart of tea country, buy Darjeeling tea at Chai Chun (Planet Mall), The Tea Cottage (Military Road), or make bulk purchases at Siliguri Tea Auction Committee (Tu-Sa 9AM-5PM). Hong Kong Market (Tu-Su 9:30AM-9:30PM) offers bargain clothing and electronics but beware of counterfeit items. Bidhan Market is the oldest and largest street market, particularly atmospheric at night.

Safety

Siliguri is an extremely safe city with very low crime rates, and violent crime against international travelers is virtually unheard of. However, as in all of India, be alert for scams and touts offering unsolicited help with directions or travel advice. If arriving after midnight, pre-book accommodation and arrange airport/station pickup. The core city areas are walkable even after dark.

Connectivity

Cell phone coverage is excellent with three major providers: Airtel (preferred for quality calls and internet speed), VI (formerly Vodafone), and Jio. International calls to Siliguri require +91 (India country code) then 0353 (area code) before the landline number. Internet can be unreliable in some areas, but both railway stations offer free high-speed WiFi (requires Indian mobile number for OTP registration).
