Why Go

Sibu is a quiet river town in Sarawak, East Malaysia, primarily known as a transit hub for boats heading up the Rejang River to Borneo's interior towns like Kapit, Dalat, and Daro. While not a major tourist destination, it offers authentic Foochow-Chinese culture, beautiful temples including the historic Tua Pek Kong Temple (built 1870), and the liveliest night market in Sarawak. The town is famous for local specialties like kompia and kampua noodles.

Understand

Sibu is one of three Malaysian towns with a predominantly Foochow-Chinese population (along with Yong Peng in Johor and Sitiawan in Perak). The town symbol is the Swan. Sibu has been dubbed the 'Wild West' of Malaysia due to perceived lawlessness and gangster activity connected to timber barons. It is also the hometown of national patriot Rosli Dhoby.

The Sibu River Wharf serves express boats up the Rejang River, with ferries to Dalat and Daro departing daily at 12:30PM and 1PM for around 30 RM. Kapit is reachable by bus.

Things to Do

Visit Tua Pek Kong Temple at sunset and ask for the key to the tower's top floor for panoramic views. Explore the Sibu Town Square (Malaysia's largest town square) and the waterfront where the Rajang and Igan rivers meet. The Sibu Central Market (largest indoor market in Malaysia) on the 1st floor has great food and cheap clothing. Nature options include Bukit Lima Nature Reserve (free entry, 5km boardwalk trail) and Sibu Lake Park in uptown areas.

Safety

Sibu has safety concerns for travelers. Gangsterism is linked to timber barons; be especially alert at Sibu Central Market where pickpocketing is common. Keep a low profile to avoid unwanted intrusive attention from locals. If pickpocketed, go to the Tourist Police Station near the Central Market.
