  1. At Magpupungko, low tide exposes rock pools beside a massive balancing boulder.
  2. Cloud 9 is the surf break that made the island internationally known.
  3. Nearby Sohoton Cove covers 600 hectares, with some caves accessible at low tide.

Why Go

Siargao is a stunning paradise island off the coast of Mindanao in the Philippines, celebrated for its world-class surfing conditions at Cloud 9 and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The island attracts both beginner and advanced surfers with annual international competitions, while non-surfers enjoy island hopping, snorkeling, scuba diving, and exploring caves and waterfalls. Prices have risen in recent years as tourism grows, but Siargao remains more affordable than Boracay or Palawan.

Understand

Siargao comprises seven towns but functions as a single destination, with General Luna (GL) serving as the main village near top surf spots. The island has gained significant popularity with daily flights from Manila and Cebu, yet retains its laid-back charm with friendly locals and numerous surfer shops. The primary surf season runs from September to November, coinciding with international competitions at Cloud 9.

Getting In

Sayak Airport in Del Carmen is the island's only airport, recently expanded to accommodate larger aircraft. Cebu Pacific operates flights to/from Cebu and Manila. By sea, ferries depart daily for Surigao City, with the journey taking several hours. From Surigao City, travelers can connect to Cebu or other Philippine destinations.

Get Around

Motorbikes are the most popular way to explore the island, available for rent throughout tourist areas. Boat trips serve island hopping excursions to nearby islands like Bucas Grande. Tricycles (motorcycle with sidecar) provide local transport, with rides from Cloud 9 to General Luna costing around PHP 30 per person.

When To Go

The best surf season runs from September to November when international competitions like the Cloud 9 Surfing Cup take place. The calmer months from April to June offer better conditions for swimming and snorkeling. Rainy season typically spans from November to February, potentially disrupting travel plans.

Where To Stay

Most accommodation clusters around General Luna (GL) and Cloud 9, with Cloud 9 offering walking distance to surf spots but more limited food options. Budget accommodations cost under PHP 700 per room per night, while mid-range options provide fan double rooms with private bathrooms. General Luna has a wider selection of restaurants and shops.

Food And Drink

Tagpuan Cafe in Dapa serves fresh shrimp and crabs near the ferry landing. The island has no shortage of beachfront bars, with BARREL Beachfront Sports Bar in General Luna offering drinks, food, and music. Nightlife centers on beach bars where travelers gather to socialize over cheap beers.

Things To Do

Surfing dominates the activity list at Cloud 9, suitable for beginners and advanced riders, with rentals and lessons available at Fat Lips Surfshop. Island hopping tours visit Sohoton Cove on Bucas Grande Island, a 600-hectare eco-reserve with lagoons and caves accessible at low tide. Inland adventures include exploring caves and waterfalls scattered across the island.

Safety

Violent crime is rare on Siargao, though petty theft occurs occasionally like in any tourist area. The primary health concern is reef cuts and scrapes, which can become infected—visitors should wear reef booties (available locally) and immediately disinfect and cover any wounds. No regional insurgency issues exist, and visitors can explore freely.

Connectivity

Mobile data is available through Philippine carriers with coverage in main tourist areas. WiFi is common in hostels and resorts, though speeds may be inconsistent during peak season.

Go Next

Direct flights via Cebu Pacific connect Siargao to Manila, Cebu, Palawan, and Boracay. Ferries run daily to Surigao City on the mainland, from where connections to other destinations are available. Cebu offers more urban attractions and diving opportunities.
