Overview
Shantou is one of China's original Special Economic Zones, a 19th-century treaty port turned industrial hub that sees far fewer foreign visitors than Guangzhou or Xiamen. The city offers a rare glimpse of preserved Teochew culture alongside decaying colonial architecture being slowly demolished for modern development.
