Overview
Shangqiu holds the distinction of being the first capital of the Shang Dynasty, making it one of China’s oldest continuously inhabited cities with over 4,000 years of documented history. Though often bypassed by tourists heading to nearby Kaifeng or Xuzhou, the city offers well-preserved ancient sites including the Shangqiu Ancient City with its Ming Dynasty buildings and the historic Yingtian Academy—once one of the most influential universities of the Northern Song Dynasty.
