Why go?

Selçuk is the basecamp for visiting the magnificent Roman ruins of Ephesus, which lie 4 km west. The town itself preserves a 14th-century İsa Bey Mosque, a Byzantine citadel atop the ancient acropolis, and the excellent Ephesus Archaeological Museum showcasing poly-breasted Artemis statues. It's a quieter, cheaper alternative to beach resort Kuşadası, with a relaxed market-town atmosphere, carpet shops, and easy access to mountain villages like Şirince.

Get in

Selçuk has a railway station on the Izmir–Aydın line with trains to Izmir (2 hr, 35 TL) and Denizli for Pamukkale (3 hr, 45 TL). The bus station is at the junction of roads D550 and D515, centrally located. Dolmuşes run to Kuşadası (30 min, 20 TL). International buses from Istanbul take 10-12 hours.

Get around

Dolmuşes toward Kuşadası pass the lower gate of Ephesus. To reach the House of Mary, take a tour or taxi. Rented motorbikes or scooters are popular for exploring the area; Şirince and the House of Mary are up in the hills. ESHOT Bus 770 runs from Selçuk via Belevi to Torbalı (for İzban) Monday-Friday hourly, Saturday-Sunday every 2 hours—but it's cashless, requiring an İzmirim Kart.

When to go

Selçuk has a Mediterranean climate: hot dry summers (June-August reach 30-35°C) and mild wet winters. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer pleasant temperatures for sightseeing and fewer crowds at Ephesus. Summer brings peak tourist numbers and higher accommodation prices. The area is largely outdoor, so extreme summer heat can make midday sightseeing uncomfortable.

Where to stay

Accommodation clusters near the railway station, bus station, and around the museum area. Budget travelers favor Boomerang Guesthouse (B&B double 500 TL) and Homeros Pension (B&B double 600 TL), both near the museum with rooftop terraces. Atilla's Getaway on the highway 2 km south offers camping (€9-12), dorms (€10-16), and doubles (€24-40) with a swimming pool and free shuttle to Selçuk and Ephesus. Mid-range options include Ephesus Palace and Ephesus Centrum (B&B double 700 TL each).

Food and drink

The main restaurant concentration is west of the railway station: Ejder Restaurant (Cengiz Topel Cd 9, daily 12:00-00:00) gets consistently good reviews for vegetarian options, while Dönercim Ümit, Pınar Pide & Çöp Şiş, and Gaziantep Kebab Salonu offer cheap eats. Near the museum, Mehmet and Ali Baba Kebab House (1047th Sk 4, daily 09:00-22:30) serves big portions of kebabs and desserts. Ayse's Kitchen (1010. Sk, daily 06:30-23:00) is renowned for gözleme, mantı, and homemade lemonade with vegetarian options. Efes Restaurant (1006 Sk 13) offers kebab, fish, Turkish homemade food with vegan options and meze with rakı. Efes beer, named for nearby Ephesus, is the standard Turkish pale lager—reliable on hot days.

Things to do

The Ephesus Archaeological Museum (Uğur Mumcu Sevgi 26, daily 08:00-17:30, adult 10€) displays ancient statues, pottery, and the poly-breasted Artemis. The Byzantine Citadel and St John Basilica (St Jean Cd, daily 08:00-18:00, adult 6€) sits on Ayasuluk hill, the original site of Ephesus; the basilica was completed in 565 AD over the apostle John's grave. İsa Bey Mosque (St Jean Cd, free, daily 09:30-21:30) is a 14th-century Ottoman mosque modelled on the Great Mosque of Damascus. Pamucak beach is the closest, the northernmost of the Kuşadası resort strip. Skydive Efes (next to Ephesus north gate) offers tandem freefall jumps for beginners. The Cave of the Seven Sleepers (Acarlar) is east of Ephesus but closed to visitors.

Connectivity

Selçuk, its approach highways, and ancient Ephesus have 4G coverage from all Turkish carriers (Turkcell, Vodafone, Türk Telekom). As of July 2022, 5G has not rolled out in Turkey. SIM cards are widely available at convenience stores and carrier shops.

Safety

Selçuk is generally safe for travelers. Standard precautions apply: watch belongings in crowded bazaars, be cautious near traffic when crossing busy roads, and stay hydrated in summer heat. The town is conservative; dress modestly when visiting mosques and religious sites.

Day trips

Şirince, a Greek-style mountain village 8 km inland, is popular for wine tasting (locally produced şarap) and scenic streets. The House of the Virgin Mary (Meryem Ana Evi) is 7 km south of Ephesus; it's a pilgrimage site with a rocky summit and chapel (daily 08:00-18:00). Belevi has a Byzantine mausoleum accessible via the ESHOT Bus 770. For beach lovers, Kuşadası resort is 15 km west with沙滩 and nightlife. Further afield, Pamukkale's thermal pools are reachable from Denizli (3-hour train ride).

Go next

Izmir (2 hr by train) is Turkey's third-largest city with a vibrant waterfront and bazaar. Bergama has the well-preserved acropolis of ancient Pergamon. Sardis, one of the Seven Churches of Asia, has another Temple of Artemis plus gymnasium and synagogue. The fertile Küçükmenderes River valley east has picturesque Tire, Ödemiş, and the medieval town of Birgi. Aphrodisias lies east via Nazilli. Kuşadası is the beach resort 15 km west. The three archaeological sites of Priene, Miletus, and Didyma are south over the hill from Kuşadası. Denizli is the transport hub for Pamukkale's geothermal travertine pools. Bodrum is the next major resort heading down the Aegean coast.
