Overview
Schöningen draws visitors almost entirely for the Paläon museum, which houses four 400,000-year-old wooden spears—the oldest human-made wooden artifacts and oldest weapons ever found, discovered in a former opencast mine outside town. The surrounding Elm Lappwald Nature Park offers forested hiking and cycling, while the compact town center features a 14th-century castle, half-timbered buildings, and a twice-weekly market.
