Overview
Schiermonnikoog is the smallest and least populated of the West Frisian Islands, with fewer than 1,000 permanent inhabitants. What it lacks in size it makes up for in tranquility: over half the island is a national park, cars are completely banned, and the main sounds are wind, bird calls, and bike bells.

Before you go
Connectivity
Standard Dutch mobile coverage. Dutch power outlets use Type F plugs (two round pins). Check with VVV for local WiFi availability.
Food
Only one supermarket (SPAR). Several restaurants, beach pavilions, and the island's own Schierse Hippo brewery. Book restaurants in peak season.
Money
Currency is EUR. SPAR supermarket on Middenstreek is the only supermarket. Cash withdrawals likely available but confirm with your bank regarding Dutch ATM networks.
Safety
Eastern half of island has tidal flats—check tide tables and return before high tide or risk being cut off.
Transport
No cars allowed on the island. Ferries from Lauwersoog: 45-min regular (bikes allowed) or 20-min express (passengers only). Book ahead in summer.
Weather
Best weather in summer. Be prepared for strong winds year-round—cycling can be challenging with headwinds. Spring brings orchid blooms.
