Before you go
Connectivity
Hotel WiFi exists in town. Mobile coverage is zero—Emril Jct and the surrounding wilderness have no signal. Satellite communicator essential for backcountry.
Food
Two bars, one cantine, one fast-food restaurant—total. No grocery store. Book accommodation dinner in advance; bring supplementary snacks.
Money
CAD is the currency. Credit card acceptance is limited—hotels accept it, but bring cash for taxis, bars, and cantines. Indigenous fare discounts exist on rail ($115 vs $175).
Safety
Remote self-sufficiency is mandatory—no mobile signal beyond Emeril Jct, no services along rail stops. Carry satellite communication, full first-aid kit, and inform someone of your itinerary before backcountry travel.
Transport
Schefferville has no road access—reach it by Tshiuetin Rail Transportation ($175 round trip, 10-12 hrs from Sept-Îles, M/Th southbound, Tu/F northbound) or Air Inuit flights from Montreal ($1,900), Quebec City ($1,800), or Sept-Îles ($1,300).
Weather
Summer brings aggressive insects; winter brings extreme cold and fog. Layer clothing year-round. Freeze-up (Oct-Nov) and break-up (Apr-May) may disrupt transport schedules.
