Overview
São João da Pesqueira is the oldest recognized municipality in Portugal, created in 1055, predating Coimbra, Guimarães, and Lamego. The town sits in the heart of the Douro wine region with extensive vineyards producing vintage and port wines.

Nearest motorways are A4 and A24. No train station in town; arrive by car or regional bus. EN222 road runs through the town connecting to river quintas.
Weather
Hot dry summers (30-35°C), cool winters (5-15°C). Best visited in spring or autumn for hiking. Harvest season (Sept-Oct) offers wine experiences but higher accommodation demand.
