Why Go?

San Luis Obispo (SLO or 'slow' to locals) sits halfway between Los Angeles (200 miles south) and San Francisco (230 miles north), nestled around two of the Nine Sisters volcanic peaks. This small college town combines one of California's oldest communities with extraordinary outdoor resources: hiking, mountain biking, sea kayaking, swimming, and surfing. The carefully preserved 19th-century downtown centers around a meticulously restored 18th-century mission, while Edna Valley hosts award-winning wineries.

Getting In

San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport offers scheduled flights from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Amtrak serves the San Luis Obispo station at 1011 Railroad Ave, a few blocks southeast of downtown with regional and local bus stops just outside. Driving via US-101 is the most common approach from either LA or San Francisco.

Getting Around

Car is the easiest way to get around town and the larger region, but many locals opt to travel by bike or walk within the city. Downtown streets are pedestrian-friendly with corridors between blocks where locals gather.

Food and Drink

Dining in San Luis Obispo costs more than affordable ethnic eateries once offered. Budget options include Kreuzberg California (685 Higuera St, $8-10 sandwiches, open Su-Tu 8AM-7PM, W-Sa 8AM-9PM) with an intellectual vibe popular among Cal Poly students. Thai Delight (1011 Higuera St, $12-18) offers authentic Thai with spiciness scaled 1-5. Firestone Grill serves what locals claim is the best Tri-tip sandwich in California. For wine tasting, drive on US-101 into Paso Robles and turn on Highway 46—wineries line both sides, and many offer free tasting. Downtown Higuera Street south of Santa Rosa Ave hosts many bars popular with the large student population, active around 10PM and busy until 2AM on weekends.

Things to Do

The Oats Peak trail is about 5.5 miles (9 km) with rewarding views of Valencia against the Pacific. Bishop Peak (no bikes allowed) and Cerro San Luis (multiple biking trails) are the two most popular hikes. Downtown SLO Farmers' Market runs Thursday 6PM-9PM along Higuera St with bands and local farmers. See movies at the Fremont Theatre (1035 Monterey St) with its vivid neon signage or the Palm Theatre (817 Palm St). Wine tasting in Edna Valley begins on Broad Street with vineyards appearing on the left.
