Overview
Samsø is a small Danish island in the Kattegat that gained international fame for running entirely on renewable energy since 1997. For travelers, the appeal is quieter: rolling green hills, excellent cycling, fresh local produce, and beaches on three sides.

Before you go
Food
Farm stands (self-serve, pay on honor) are excellent for budget eating. Ballen and Nordby concentrate restaurants. Samsø potatoes and strawberries are seasonal highlights.
Money
Denmark uses Danish Krone (DKK). Cards are accepted nearly everywhere, but carry some cash for farm stands and smaller vendors. No ATM specifically listed on island—plan to withdraw before taking the ferry.
Safety
Very safe island. Watch for birds nesting in protected areas, keep pets controlled, use marked fireplaces only. Narrow roads require careful driving.
Transport
Bikes are ideal for exploring; bring your own or rent. Ferries from both Zealand and Jutland carry cars. Bus routes connect villages but are less frequent than bikes.
Weather
Danish summer is mild (15-22°C) with long daylight hours. Pack layers and rain gear regardless of season. Beach weather peaks July-August.
