Overview
Salalah is the capital of Oman's southern Dhofar region, the second largest city in the Sultanate, and the birthplace of Sultan Qaboos. The city serves as the gateway to Dhofar—a historically independent, culturally and ecologically unique region known for its summer khareef (monsoon) when the desert transforms into verdant greenery.

Culture
Conservative dress required outside hotel beaches. Carry identification as police checkpoints are common. Most residents speak some English; Arabic and Malayalam are also helpful.
Money
Currency is Omani Rial (OMR), with 1 OMR = 1000 baizas. International credit cards are accepted at higher-end establishments but carry a surcharge. ATMs are widely available.
Safety
Very safe city overall. Sea has dangerous currents—avoid swimming. Local driving style may be challenging for visitors.
Transport
Taxis are the main local transport; rental cars available from Malatan Trading and Bin Qasim Transport. Oman Air connects Salalah to Muscat (1hr 30min) and international destinations. ONTC buses run to Muscat (12hr, RO 6-11).
Weather
July-August brings the khareef (monsoon) with green landscapes and occasional flooding. May-June are hottest. The dry season (October-May) is best for diving and bird watching. Always carry water and sunblock.
