Overview
Saalfeld is a compact city in Thuringia best known internationally for its connection to the British royal family—the town was the former capital of the branch of the House of Wettins that became the Windsors. The main draw is the nationally famous Saalfelder Feengrotten (Fairy Grottoes), a former slate mine turned into a spectacular underground attraction with colorful mineral formations.
