History
Founded in 915 AD as a Mercian fortress. Industrial boom came with Bridgewater Canal. Designated new town in 1960s. Notable local connection to Lewis Carroll (born in nearby Daresbury) and Titanic Captain Edward Smith (regular pub visitor).

Transport
Runcorn has two stations—Runcorn (Old Town) for Liverpool/Chester/Birmingham and Runcorn East (New Town) for Manchester. The M56 motorway passes to the south.
