Getting In
Rockhampton Airport is located just west of the city with signposted access from the Bruce Highway. Qantaslink operates seven direct flights daily to Brisbane on weekdays, with fewer on weekends. Virgin Australia flies direct to Sydney, Brisbane, and Townsville. Qantaslink also runs twice-daily all-stops flights north and south to Gladstone. The city sits on the Bruce Highway (A1), making it accessible by road from Mackay to the north and Brisbane to the south.

Get Around
Rockhampton has considerable traffic on its roads with a substantial suburban area. The city is best explored by car, though attractions like the Botanic Gardens and Zoo are adjacent to each other on Spencer Street. Archer Park Station and Steam Tram Museum offers restored steam tram rides on Sundays through city streets. The Fitzroy River runs through the city with the riverside esplanade providing pleasant walking areas.

When To Go
Rockhampton lies on the Tropic of Capricorn, marking the boundary between temperate zone to the south and tropical zone to the north. The Capricorn Spire marks this geographic line on the Bruce Highway south of the city. Summer months (December-February) bring tropical weather with heat and humidity, while winter months offer milder conditions. The city serves as a base for accessing the Great Barrier Reef and Keppel Islands from nearby Yeppoon, approximately 30 minutes drive away.

Rockhampton has many motels mostly located on roads leading into and out of town, with many offering standby rates. Quest Rockhampton along the Fitzroy River offers hotel accommodation. Villa Capri at 69-77 George St provides apartments from approximately $150/night with secure parking, spacious rooms, and a small pool. Alternative accommodation is available in nearby Yeppoon, which tends to have a nicer aspect while remaining within easy reach of downtown Rockhampton.

Food And Drink
As Australia's beef capital, Rockhampton is renowned for its steakhouses. The Great Western Hotel at the corner of Stanley and Denison Streets features a steakhouse with rodeo arena viewing on Wednesday and Friday nights. The Ascot Hotel at 177 Musgrave Street serves large-portion steaks on a StoneGrill, considered among the best in Australia. For other cuisines, Pacino's on East Street offers Italian food, Punjabi's provides authentic Indian cuisine, and Saigon Saigon serves Vietnamese-Chinese fusion by the river. The Criterion Hotel at 150 Quay Street stays open until 3AM on weekends. Be aware that many establishments, especially along the Bruce Highway south of the river, become drive-thru only after 8:30-9PM as an anti-crime deterrent.

Caves And Nature
Mount Etna Caves National Park is located 30km north on the Bruce Highway with access for 2-wheel drive vehicles for experienced independent caving. The nearby Capricorn Caves, 26km north on the Bruce Highway, offers guided tours. Mount Archer in the national park provides pleasant views of Rockhampton from Frenchville, accessible via Pilbeam Drive to the top. The Capricorn Spire marks the Tropic of Capricorn location at the tourist information on the Bruce Highway south of the city.

Stay Safe
Rockhampton is about as far south as the salt water crocodile habitat extends. These dangerous animals are present in the Fitzroy River and surrounding waterways. If traveling north along Australia's east coast, Rockhampton is where crocodile awareness becomes essential. Crocodiles are regularly seen in the Fitzroy River.
