Culture
Indonesian based on the Riau dialect of Malay is the official language, regarded as the purest form of Malay—Malaysian visitors will find it very similar to Bahasa Malaysia. Chinese communities speak Hokkien, Teochew, and Mandarin. Respect Islamic customs when visiting mosques.
Money
Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) is the local currency. ATMs are widely available in Bintan and Batam but scarcer on smaller islands. Credit cards are accepted at resorts and upscale restaurants but cash is needed for local transport and smaller establishments. Prices are higher than typical Indonesian destinations due to proximity to Singapore.
Safety
The region has a very low crime rate and no reported terrorism. Standard precautions apply. Illegal drugs are widely available in Bat am's nightlife areas—avoid them. Beach and water sports safety should be observed.
Transport
Ferries from Singapore (HarbourFront and Tanah Merah) to Bintan (25-45 min) and Batam (45-60 min) are the main entry points. Inter-island ferries and speedboats connect major islands. Within towns, becak and ojek (motorbike taxis) are common. Car rental is available on larger islands.
