Overview
Rathen is a minuscule spa town of just 339 inhabitants, but its location straddling the Elbe makes it the perfect launchpad for the Bastei cliffs—the most iconic rock formation in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The steep 150-metre ascent from the village delivers you to sweeping views of the Elbe canyon and the remains of a medieval fortress, a landscape so dramatic it inspired Romantic painters and now draws hikers from across Europe.

Before you go
Money
Germany uses the Euro. ATMs are available in nearby Bad Schandau; Rathen itself has limited banking facilities.
Packing
Bring sturdy hiking boots for the Bastei ascent—paths are maintained but steep, and sections have steps.
Safety
The Bastei paths are well-maintained but steep; stay on marked routes as cliff edges can be hazardous.
Transport
Rathen station is on the east bank; the ferry crossing (05:30-23:45 daily) is required to reach the village and does not accept VVO or Deutschlandticket.
