Overview
Qiqihar is a mid-sized northern Chinese city (1.5 million in the city proper, 6.1 million in the prefecture) that serves as a transport hub for Heilongjiang Province. It has little conventional tourism appeal, but the city is famous for Zhalong Nature Reserve and its red-crowned cranes, making it a worthwhile stop for nature lovers.

Transport
Qiqihar South railway station handles high-speed trains; the original Qiqihar Railway Station is a major hub for conventional rail across northeastern China. Buses to Zhalong leave from Longhua Road bus station (¥5, 1 hour).

Extreme continental climate: January averages -22.9°C, July averages 28.5°C. Peak rainfall July-August. Best visited April-June for Zhalong cranes.
