Overview
Putian is a historic coastal city in Fujian Province with over 1,400 years of history, known as the birthplace of Mazu culture - a UN-listed intangible cultural heritage with 3,000 temples worldwide and 100 million worshippers. Culture
Putian is the birthplace of Mazu culture, a UN-listed intangible cultural heritage. The city's unique Puxian Min dialect differs from surrounding Minnan and Fuzhou dialects. Traditional "White-Margined Spring Couplets" (白额春联) written on white paper reflect local mourning customs.
Food
Putian cuisine features thin rice noodles (兴化米粉), braised noodles (卤面), pig trotter jelly, and oyster omelette. Local restaurants offer meals from ¥20-80 per person. Meizhou Island is famous for fresh seafood.
Language
Puxian Min (Henghua) is the local dialect, not mutually intelligible with other Chinese varieties. Mandarin is widely spoken, especially by younger residents. Some English speakers at hotels but limited elsewhere.
Money
Chinese Yuan (CNY) is the local currency. ATMs are available in the city center. Credit cards are accepted at larger hotels and restaurants but cash is preferred at local markets and small eateries.
Transport
Putian Railway Station offers high-speed rail to Fuzhou (30 min), Quanzhou (40 min), and Xiamen (1 hour). Local buses cost around ¥2-5 per ride. Taxis and ride-hailing apps like DiDi are available.
Weather
Best visited in autumn (September-October) with pleasant 24-31°C temperatures. Summer is hot (up to 33°C) with typhoon risks. Winter is mild (11-18°C) and dry - comfortable for sightseeing.
